Fair Wealth

April 7 - 13, 2003

with Dr. Wolfganag Sachs, and Dr. Vandana Shiva

Wealth and well-being for more and more people is the proclaimed goal of development. However, the style of wealth produced by what is called “economic development” is incapable of justice. It cannot be universalized to all people - or else the biosphere will be ruined. The automobile society, meat-based food systems, and industrial agriculture are cases in point.

How could wealth be transformed so that everybody can eventually share in it ? Moreover, resource rights of rural communities can only be secured if the well-off bring down their demand for crops, water, fish, timber, minerals, and oil. There can't be poverty alleviation without wealth alleviation. Is it possible to create resource-light economies that weigh less heavily on the planet and on people?

The course will take a closer look at the conventional notions of wealth, the link between equity and ecology, the experiments in North and South for sustainable production and consumption patterns, and the prospects of graceful simplicity amidst increasing affluence.

The Course

The course will begin on the Bija Vidyapeeth campus, set on Navdanya’s organic farm (a few kilometers outside of Dehra Dun, Uttaranchal, India).
