Food First: Food, Famine & Freedom from Hunger

October 1 - 14, 2003

with Frances Moore Lappé and Dr. Vandana Shiva

Food is at the heart of globalization and industrialization. It has become the most contentious issue in trade and technology. The course will go into an analysis of how food is changing, in terms of how it is grown, how it is processed, who controls it, who has access to it. It will cover issues of hunger, famine, of food hazards and food scares including GMOs, mad cow disease, chemical hazards, and fast food.
The course will also explore creative alternatives – organic farming and ecological agriculture, the resurgence of traditional food cultures, celebration of biological, and cultural diversity, just and fair trade, movements for food sovereignty, food security and food safety.
The course will have a large component of practical work in organic farming and cooking, taking advantage of the location of the Bija Vidyapeeth campus on Navdanya’s organic farm and seed and biodiversity conservation center.

The Course

The course will begin in Delhi with the Albert Howard Memorial Lecture, held annually on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. It will then proceed to the Bija Vidyapeeth campus, set on Navdanya’s organic farm (a few kilometers outside of Dehra Dun, Uttaranchal, India - see location details) for the remainder of the program.
