Press release: Rotting grain violates the sanctity of food and the right to food

The Supreme Court has recently ordered the Centre to distribute food grains from overflowing Government owned go-downs to the million poor of our country instead of letting it rot in rains.

On Monday, the Food and Civil Supplies Ministry has in fact admitted in an affidavit to the Supreme Court that more than 67,000 tonnes of food grains have gone waste as they were rotting in overflowing go-downs without being distributed.

After years of steady campaigning by NGOs and civil society worldwide, Vedanta’s plans of mining bauxite from the sacred Niyamgiri mountain in Orissa have finally been put to rest as the MoEF appointed committee headed by N.C. Saxena to look into the Niyamgiri matter went public with its report on 16th August 2010.
