We have turned our backs to the Earth.  We have forgotten that she supports us, that she gives us food, she gives us water.  The Right to Food & Water are derived from the Rights of Mother Earth.  The more we neglect her and privatize her resources, the more people go hungry and without water.

As we celebrate 20 years of Navdanya’s formal existence, we celebrate Earth Democracy based on our practice of Bija Swaraj, Bhu Swaraj, Anna Swaraj, Jal Swaraj and Van Swaraj.

In Bolivia an international Conference was organized on the Rights of Mother Earth to coincide with Mother Earth Day, April 20th – 22nd.  Bolivia has established a Ministry for the Rights of Mother Earth, and has initiated a process to introduce the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth to complement the Universal Declaration on Human Rights in the UN.

Navdanya has been an active member of the global community articulating Earth Rights, the Rights of the Planet.  Bhoomi, the Earth Movement will connect the struggles of our adivasis and farmers in defence of their land, the Movements for the right to food and right to water, and Movements for human rights in one indivisible fabric rooted in the Earth & her ecological life supporting processes.

Starting May 2010, monthly public events & activities will lead up to the first edition of the BHOOMI festival, on October 2, 2010 and will continue beyond.  Join us as we come together to recognize, honor and protect the rights of our Planet, so together we can begin to heal our Bhoomi.

About Navdanya

Navdanya means “nine seeds” (symbolizing protection of biological and cultural diversity) and also the “new gift” (for seed as commons, based on the right to save and share seeds In today’s context of biological and ecological destruction, seed savers are the true givers of seed. This gift or “dana” of Navadhanyas (nine seeds) is the ultimate gift – it is a gift of life, of heritage and continuity. Conserving seed is conserving biodiversity, conserving knowledge of the seed and its utilization, conserving culture, conserving sustainability.
